About Shadetree Custom Designs:

My name is Mary Rothenmaier and my business is called Shadetree Custom Designs, LLC. I specialize in custom window treatments and sewing for the home. I consult with you to design and create window treatments that work in your home. I can provide design experience, fabric searches, wrought iron and wood hardware, blinds and shades, installation and custom hardware. I also sew items for your home, including pillows, cushions, and table linens.

My specialty is working with sustainable fabric; dupione silk, organic cottons, hemp, and blends of interesting natural fibers. In the fall of 2004, I traveled to China with Organic Exchange, a non-profit that links together all the farmers, producers, end users of organic cotton. There I learned that conventional cotton is grown using 25% of our nations agriculture chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides), 9 of which are cancer-causing agents.

My business is based out of my home. I currently sew all my own products in my workroom in the rolling hills of southwest Dane County. I have been doing this part time since 2001. I continue to improve my skills and services through classes and seminars; there is always room for improvement.

I am always interested in ways to give back to the community. See the links page for charitable sewing sites. I continue to look for ways to improve the environmental sustainability of my business; my fabric remnants get made into eye pillows, mini-purses or sent to Goodwill. From there they are made into cleaning rags.

I am very thankful for the clients I have worked with over the years and inspiration they provide.

This is how I work:

I visit your home to see your windows or sewing needs. Your concerns may be energy efficiency, reducing glare, framing a view, or decorative. We discuss ideas including; fabrics, designs, styles, blinds, shades, linings, fullness, hardware. We measure your windows. You will receive a written proposal, which may need some changes. We will talk over the phone to fine tune your project or if the changes are extensive I will send out a new proposal. I will conduct a fabric search based on your design needs. To start your project, I will need a deposit of 50%.
